B-4 / Marilyn Monroe / NYC / September 1954

Created in 1954 at Milton's studio in New York City, this image is from one of Milton and Marilyn's most recognized collaborations – the “Ballerina” sitting. Clothing designer Ann Klein sent various outfits to Milton's studio for Marilyn to wear. The outfits, however, were two sizes too small and all of the poses in this sitting amusingly had to deal with the problem of holding up the front of the ill-fitting toile and satin dress. The most recognized image from this sitting was chosen as one of Time/Life's three most popular images of the 20th Century, along with those of Albert Einstein (photographer Philippe Halsman) and Winston Churchill (photographer Joseph Karsch). This image was first published in 1973 and has never been exhibited until this year. It is being shown as a part of “Portraits of an Era,” produced by The Archives in collaboration with Hewlett Packard.
