P-53 / Marilyn Monroe / LA / May 1954

Published for the first time in Milton's Marilyn, this image comes from the appropriately titled “Peasant” sitting – one of our favorites – taken on the same French village set used to film What Price Glory. Milton, inspired by the novel, The Brothers Karamazov (for which he’d optioned the film rights), wanted to convince Marilyn of her potential as a dramatic actress and to prove his point, he photographed her in this costume, worn by Jennifer Jones for her Oscar-winning performance in The Song of Bernadette. Though several images in this series confirm Marilyn’s dramatic side, here she is caught enjoying a lighter persona.
