Middle Row from left to right: Martin Scorsese, Liza Minnelli, Milton H. Greene
Front row from left to right: Julia Cameron, Amy Greene, Sammy Davis Jr.

After the run-away success of Taxi Driver, Martin Scorsese went on to direct New York, New York, his first big-budget major motion picture starring Liza Minnelli and Robert De Niro. The above photo was taken in 1976, during a break in the filming of New York, New York and not long after the release of Taxi Driver. Seen in the photo are Milton and Amy Greene, Sammy Davis Jr and wife Altovise, Martin Scorsese and then-wife Julia Cameron, Liza with then-husband Jack Haley Jr., as well as Sammy's long time Road Manager and friend Murphy Bennett. Here, the camaraderie of these friends is on full display. Sammy and Liza were much more than friends, they were a part of the Greene family.

Audrey Hepburn - 1951 - New York City
March 25th, 2015 1:29 pm

Audrey Hepburn by Milton H. Greene taken in New York City 1951

"While in the South of France in 1951, Colette, the writer of “Gigi”, spotted Audrey and said to her husband, Maurice Goudeket, “That’s the Gigi I want for the New York run!” Audrey was only 18 years old and starring in her first Broadway show, a smash! Milton photographed the play for Life. They became friends and even dated for a while. The “TRUST” remained forever.

So much so that when she starred in "Ondine" on Broadway with her then husband Mel Ferrer, Milton was the only photographer asked to photograph the show and was given world rights as a gift of "TRUST"."

Happy Birthday Steve McQueen!

Steve McQueen Photographed by Milton H. Greene, Los Angeles 1969

"Celebrities always have their radar up. They know instinctively who to trust and who not to. Steve was the most private man. He wouldn't allow anyone into his home, his office or access to his family. Milton, like the Invisible Man, walked through everywhere.

Steve’s first wife Neile built a dressing room with a closet 16 feet long where his clothes were hung immaculately on beautiful hangers. What made me chuckle was his 300 pairs of blue jeans starched and pressed with a killer crease going down the front.

Whenever Steve made a film, Neile a very astute businesswoman, bought real estate in Los Angeles and added another room to the house. My favorite was the very large living area called the Thomas Crown Room."

Sophia Loren, 1966 Italy
March 20th, 2015 1:53 pm

"Even though Milton was well versed in studio photography using controlled lighting, he was a natural light photographer at heart. He always said, "If you can't light it with one light, then you can't light it." When a photographer works in natural light, the only thing they have control over is the timing of when they shoot. This picture of Sophia is a combination of her being pleased with herself and Milton's luck.

"Milton Greene was the best photographer of women I ever knew." Richard Avedon, Photographer"

Sammy Davis Jr. and Liza Minnelli
1976, Fort Lauderdale

Liza Minnelli's birthday is March 12th. Liza's relationship to the Greene family goes back to her youth, when her mother, Judy Garland, and Milton worked together on numerous projects. Joshua and Liza remain friends to this day. Below is an excerpt from But That's Another Story by Amy & Joshua Greene.

"In 1976, Marge and Irving Cowan, who owned the Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood, Florida, hired Liza and Sammy to perform on New Year's Eve. With Leslie Bricusse and Marvin Hamlisch in tow, the Greene family and Davis clan spent two marvelous weeks together. This lovely image was used for the invitation and advertising."
